05/01: Quantum crypto hacked

apparently a bunch of people from MIT found a way to extract almost half the data over a connection encrypted with quantum encryption. for some time this has been touted as basicly the most secure method of crypto. What does this mean to corporations and goverment agencies? nothing now but as soon as we see some proof of concept code which will happen eventually the shit will hit the fan.

This just goes to show you that nothing is foolproof and aside from the odvious human component being inherintly flawed so is our most secure forms of keeping the information safe electronicly.

05/01: A few awesome tools ive discovered

over last couple weeks i have had to tackle some odd issues. Doing so has allowed me to discover some great tools.

I was interested in finding a good network monitoring tool and found a few really good options

IPCheck Server Monitor - This one is not free but appears to have all the bells and whistles and a very nice gui. i havent tried it but i have talked to friends who have and they seem to love it. you can find it HERE

PRTG Traffic Grapher - This tool is made by the same company as ipcheck server monitor and handles network monitoring like a pro(this is not a free tool) you can find it HERE

Nagios - Heres a great tool and its free ive been using this one for a week now and although its gui isnt as clean as some, it has all the features you could want and more. i especially like the ability to monitor via my cell phone. This is a FREE open source tool. you can find it HERE

i found this tool last week, it allows you to upload a file, and have it scanned by multiple virus scanners. Virustotal scanner

05/01: New job in IT

Well this is my first post, but im not the type that likes to dwell on introductions so ill just get into the meat and potatoes of what it is i do and what i have to say.

I graduated college last week with an associated in networking technology.

I immediately began my new job, as an assistant to the network admin in a small company. This is a great opportunity for me to get more experience in the feild of IT and Network Administration.

I spent the week setting up our new Vaio Handhelds(VGN-UX200 series) They are nice, but the screen size is extrememly smll and ive come to the conclusion after removing the software we didnt need that they are one of the most bloated software packages ive ever seen. I spent a day here just going thorugh the software, and processes getting rid of everything we didnt need.

a few of the nicer features include the built in fingerprint scanner(although i had to swipe my finger like 8 times till it accepted it) it has a built in camera front and back(really poor camera) and runs windows xp like a champ.

i highly reccomend spending the first day getting rid of bloat on these. they also have built in wifi/bluetooth controlled by same switch on side of device, and i dont really like that.
